Le Monde ('the world') is a French daily newspaper published in Paris and distributed both throughout France and worldwide. The newspaper began publication in 1944 at the request of General Charles de Gaulle after the German army was driven from Paris. Le Monde generally maintains a moderate to center-left editorial view. It is one of the four major French newspapers, along with Le Figaro, Liberation and Ouest-France.
